What are Wisdom Tooth Extractions
We have four wisdom teeth and they break through the gum normally when the patient is 16-18 years old.
They usually don’t cause a problem, but they have to be removed from the mouth if they get infected, impacted, decayed or misaligned.
However, they do not have to be removed if they are healthy, fully erupted, able to be cleaned properly, and biting properly with their opposing teeth.

How do I know if i need a tooth extraction?
The main symptoms you may notice are:
- Inflamed gums
- Sinus issues
- Persistent pain, swelling and aggravated pressure
- Jaw stiffness
These are early signs that your wisdom tooth needs to be removed immediately. Call us now and make an appointment for us to give you personal advice on your treatment.
Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure
Before the surgery, you will talk about the process with your oral surgeon, when you should discuss your oral health issues, ask any questions, talk about the type of anaesthetic you require (local or general) and organize your appointment.
The process will take about 45 minutes. Your dentist will stitch the wound so that it heals quickly and the stitches will dissolve after a few days, and they are to give you gauze pads after the procedure to soak up the blood.
Alternative treatments to extraction
Your dentist may recommend a coronectomy instead, which is removing only the crown of your tooth. It eliminates the risk of nerve damage by removing only the top (crown), leaving the roots in place. This procedure will be the best option if your tooth is not infected or will not cause further and more serious problems.
When and why would a Wisdom Tooth Extraction be necessary?
If a wisdom tooth erupts partially through the gum, it can allow bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection, which creates pain, swelling, even tooth decay or gum disease. Besides, they can grow misaligned – horizontally, angled inward or outward – which may result in crowd, thus, in damage to adjacent teeth, jaw or nerves. Infected wisdom teeth can lead to cysts around the impacted teeth. When they are infected, partially erupted, or cause pressure on adjacent teeth, they need to come out.
The main problems they can cause if not taken out are:
Jaw damage
Repeated infection of soft tissue
Cysts
Damage to nearby teeth
Questions about Wisdom Tooth Extractions?
What to eat after wisdom tooth extraction?
Consume for the first few days soft and liquid foods, such as smoothies, mashed items, puddings and avoid hot foods, which can dissolve the clot and slow the healing process. As your recovery process improves, you can gently incorporate solid foods.
Is wisdom tooth extraction painful?
All tooth extractions are under local anaesthesia, so you will feel no pain at all; it will be completely numb. Only if your wisdom tooth is stuck in the bone you may feel some pressure, but it’s not unpleasant.
Can I travel after wisdom tooth extraction?
If you are travelling by plane, it’s advisable that you wait 24-48 hours after the procedure because, even though it’s completely safe, it’s best that you take a rest to prevent any complications from arising. Besides, flying can cause sinus pressure, headaches, and toothaches, so this can be worse if you just have a wisdom tooth extraction.
How long does wisdom tooth pain last?
The area will be numb for 2 hours after the extraction, but when the effect has worn off, it varies from person to person. Generally, it should be comfortable after 2-3 days after the procedure, and 3-7 days after, there any pain should be completely gone.
What is an impacted wisdom tooth?
An impacted wisdom tooth is when it’s stuck inside the jawbone and won’t erupt through it because they don’t have enough room to grow normally. In order to remove them, your dentist will need to cut the gums open and drill your bone to expose the tooth so that it comes out more easily.
How to deal with wisdom tooth pain?
When the anaesthesia wears off and if you feel any pain, it’s recommended that you try alternating cold compresses over the jaw area, which will relieve any discomfort.
How long does wisdom tooth extraction take?
They usually take around 90 minutes, but if your wisdom tooth is impacted, it can take up to 1 hour, depending on the complexity of the case.
What is the process in extracting a wisdom tooth?
Before your dentist pulls out your tooth, he is to give you an injection of local anaesthetic to numb the affected area, where the tooth will be removed.
Only in some instances will your dentist use general sedation. In case the tooth is impacted, the dentist will carefully cut away your gum and bone tissue covering the tooth, then they will grasp the tooth using forceps.
A wisdom tooth fully erupted can be extracted very easily. If it’s a hard-to-pull tooth, it should be removed in pieces to minimize the amount of bone it needs to be removed.
