Taping/ Strapping Theory

Taping or strapping are used to restrict undesired, excessive and potentially harmful motion but it is applied in such a way as to allow desired normal range of motion. Regardless of how well taping works at providing support to joints and muscles, it should not be used as a substitute for correct rehabilitation exercises and adequate time for full recovery of the injury. Routine taping of the ankle in the absence of precompetition exercises, provides the athlete with substandard care. For this reason, taping should work in conjunction with stretching and strengthening exercises. I use many different types of tapes, cohesive bandages, elastic adhesive bandages, zinc oxide tape and kinesiology tape.

What is it useful for?

Strapping & Taping are effective in the treatment of:

Prevention

Taping can be used as a preventive measure in high risk activities, for example ankle and finger sprains in basketball, biceps tendon problems in rugby, wrist and ankle injuries in gymnastics.

Rehabilitation

Taping is used as a protective mechanism during the healing and rehabilitation phase

Limitation of excessive joint movements

Tape can be used to provide support to the stretched ligaments and joint capsule of unstable, previously injured joints by limiting the excessive and abnormal joint range of motion while allowing normal range of motion .

Kinesiology Taping

Kinesio Taping is generally safe for all the populations, this will range from the very young to the very old, to the very fit to the not so fit. The Kinesiology Taping method is a therapeutic taping technique not only offering the athlete and patient the support that they are looking for, but also rehabilitating the affected condition as well, this will allow the athlete/patient to remain active throughout their sport or even their day to day activities. Kinesiology Taping helps alleviate pain and encourages the facilitation of lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting affect helps forms distortions in the skin thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in the inflammatory process of the affected area.
